This architectural landmark building was built in 1957 to house the headquarters of Imperial Oil. Originally destined to be the design for Toronto’s City hall, Nathan Phillips (Toronto’s mayor in 1955) decided to open the commission to an international competition. In the end, Imperial Oil bought the design from Alvan Mathers to be used for their Toronto head office.
